Looking forward to a more active lifestyle.
There’s a lot of room for improvement here. During working life, exercise hasn’t been something I’ve prioritized, at least not for very long. I walked our dogs each morning, usually for 1-2 miles on average, but despite that it medically qualifies as exercise, it doesn’t really seem like it to me. Better than nothing, I suppose.
Moving into this new phase, I’m hoping to develop exercise practices I can stick with for the long haul. I still need to brush up on many of these areas and create an approach. I also need to make sure whether or how I will use some of the fitness gear I’ve brought in the RV. I always do better when I can reference an expert’s advice and keep a log or checklist. But for the moment, below are my big-picture goals.
Flexibility
I’m not sure yet whether Yoga will be part of my routine, but I will incorporate daily elements that improve flexibility.
Endurance
While I don’t expect to be competing in any Iron Man’s, my cardio endurance is pretty poor right now. Almost any regular exercise is going to make a big improvement here.
Strength & Toning
These are particularly important elements for women’s bodies as we age.
Weight Loss
I’ve listed this last because although it is part of my fitness goal, it is not the main one. It is also intertwined with the changes I’m hoping we can make to our food approaches.
Today is the first day of our Shakedown Trip and after walking the dogs I took a short walk/run. I went less than a mile and there was plenty of walking, but it felt like the right speed and distance for the moment. Just a little “Hello! Remember this?” to my joints and muscles.
As I work through establishing routines, I’ll provide updates. If I’m honest, figuring out how to accomplish these fitness goals feels a little intimidating. But I’m going to try to remember that slow & steady wins the race.
